John Barlow on Facebook asking people to un-friend him, so he can find Real Friends really shows what a pompous ass he is, unsubscribed forever is my reaction, and just because you can spin a nice set of lyrics, doesn't make you someone you'd want to hang out with...

I don't know that I'd call him a pompous ass but him going around speaking for Jerry and what Jerry would wanted that further lead creedence to Bob catching all the shit for not thinking every single Dead SBD belonged to everybody and should be free. I've said it a million times, THAT is pompous for people thinking they own all live Dead concerts or they should be free. Especially with how generous the band always was.

I follow JPB on Twitter, which doesn't suffer the same verbosity as Facebook. I've not spent any time on Facebook, but to see what my kids are up to...

Twitter has been and will always be a great source of fun and camaraderie for me. Plus, it has the advantage of being very quick and ignorable.

Anyone who'd like to follow me, please feel free. I'm @mbleib

Anyway, JPB is very smart, somewhat political, and often funny on Twitter. I do enjoy his content.

haha! what took you so long I've been waiting? Ok you and wordsmith and others I forget are going to give me shit but you know as much as I've really tried just can't get into him. Besides going anywhere is a major ordeal with babysitter etc. I'm saving my excursions for Dan Bern for sure and hopefully Leo Kottke. I know RT is a legend and so many people ( such as yourself ) who's musical tastes I respect love him but he just doesnt do it for me. It's the voice. Plus I think he's at the lame ass performing arts center. Not lame for being a nice theater or acoustics both are great, just a real boring crowd usually like going to the symphany. Of course Kottke will be playing there and I want to go so I guess that excuse doesn't hold.

Well, as a guy that saw jerry many many nights in the 80's, i'm able to get past problematic vocals... (although I think RT is might fine).

Leo was in your area LAST weekend... unless there's future dates not shown on his site. http://leokottke.com/

Caveat: My sister saw him this past year and was less than impressed... thought he was drunk or impaired. Couldn't remember lyrics to "Louise" for example, and thought he was off-rhythm often. (Full disclosure - I'm a big fan, have seen him several times in concert.)

WHOOPS! Guess I missed him. Oh well I did see him last time. Definitely going to see Dan Bern though hmm maybe he was drunk? I've only seen him once and it was KILLER. Love the dry wit between or even in the middle of songs. Wasn't expecting that. Must be a Minnesota thing? Kimd of reminded me of garrison Keiler only funnier.Maybe more like Louden wainwright who I also love.

I heard them together on the world cafe for this tour. It did sound like it would have been fun bonus - Suzanne Vega who I used to have a crush on ( weakness for red heads )

Me too - weakness for red heads. I'll see Loudon's son next Friday (whose Richard's son, Teddy, often plays with) - and whose tangled web also includes Leonard Cohen as his kid's grandfather (Leonard's daughter as surrogate for Rufus and his partner).

real cool how the next generation is keeping it going and playing with each other. I don't own any of his stuff but I really dig what Rufus is doing.

Rufus did a great redhead tribute to Judy Garland; his new album is freaking fantastic:

is it possible that it is not really him?

It seems with such a online savvy guy he would have a standard artists page that people "like" and he posts stuff through, as opposed to a personal two-way page. Besides, he can unfriend anyone he wants himself. something doesn't add up if you ask me.

could be that reacurring FB Spam that says "I'm cleaning up my Friends list so please contact me if you..." It's not an actual post but a minor hack. I've seen the exact msg too many times. You FB peeps know what I'm talkin about. (I spend far too much time there-lol)

Really?!?
You care what Barlow does on FB?
He's not your friend. He's just a guy trying to live his life.

Actually, he is a guy I enjoyed hanging out with recently at a Warfield show. It was the first time I had met him and he was quite a nice guy. He's warm, funny and very, very smart. And as he said, "everyone knows the other guys wrote better songs." Then again, I don't waste my time on facebook (this forum meets that need for online interaction).

So cool you got to meet him.
He wrote some great lyrics. Always been impressed with some of the tunes on Weir's Heaven Help the Fool, like
This Time Forever and Shade of Grey. And Just a Little Light with the Dead. Others too.
Course he wrote I Want to Live in America. Nobody bats 1.000 I guess.
